Poland intends to build a fence with an electronic tracking system on the border with Belarus along the Bug River. The Border Service has already announced a tender for its construction. This was stated by Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski during a briefing at the Terespol-Brest border crossing.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained that the Polish authorities initially did not consider building a dam on the river, so as not to block the path to water for citizens.
At the same time, the Chief Commandant of the Polish Border Service, Tomasz Praga, emphasized the importance of the electronic barrier as an innovative solution that allows the border to be guarded around the clock and not limit the use of the river.
According to the Wyborcza newspaper, the estimated length of the fence is 172 kilometers. It is planned to equip the barrier with 4.5 thousand motion sensors, cameras and thermal imagers. Construction work is scheduled to begin before the end of the year. The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry also recalled that the construction of an electronic barrier on the border with the Kaliningrad region of Russia will be completed in October. Previously, Polish authorities claimed that this section would become the EU’s most secure border.
