The United States notified Russia of the launch of the Minuteman III missile, the Kremlin said.
“Such launches are naturally subject to notification through the appropriate channels. Therefore, all the necessary notifications, of course, were received,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
He clarified that the Russian side is doing the same. Peskov did not comment on the failure of the missile test. “This should not be the subject of our comments,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
The missile test took place on November 1. It was stopped at 12:06 pm Pacific time (22:06 Moscow time) due to an “anomaly” reported at the US Air Force Global Strike Command. It is clarified that an anomaly is considered “any unexpected event during a test.” The statement did not explain what exactly happened to the missile.
In early September, Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder reported, that the United States warned Russia about testing the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Ryder clarified that the test is routine and was planned several years ago.
The Minuteman III missile (translated from English as “militiaman”) was developed by Boeing and entered into service in 1970. The maximum firing range is 15,000 km. The length of the missile with its warhead exceeds 18 m. It can carry from one to three warheads with a capacity of 0.3-0.6 Mt.
On October 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia had successfully tested a global-range cruise missile with a nuclear propulsion system, Burevestnik, and had completed work on the Sarmat super-heavy missile. He noted that mass production of these missiles and their placement on combat duty will begin in the near future.
