Peskov stressed that NATO does not bring peace and stability

The Kremlin believes that NATO is destabilizing the situation in the regions of presence. This was stated by the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.

“NATO does not bring peace and stability. NATO is a structure that is more likely to destabilize the situation in those regions in which it is present. We see this process as follows,” Peskov commented on the plans to open a representative office of the organization in Japan and increase influence in India.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he did not agree with the proposal to open a NATO office in Tokyo. According to him, the alliance needs to be limited to the “North Atlantic”. He added that if NATO expands its geography, “we will make a mistake.”

In May, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova statedthat NATO’s intention to open an office in Tokyo is “another evidence, already practical, not illusory, of the global ambitions and plans of the alliance to gain a solid foothold in the Asia-Pacific region,” which could lead to the militarization of the region.

As for India, the House Select Committee on China proposed to accelerate India’s accession to the NATO+ format, the media wrote. However, on June 8, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar notedthat the block approach in international security policy is not applicable to Delhi, but he welcomed the desire of the United States to cooperate more closely with India.

In May, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov declaredthat the NATO countries continue to stubbornly stick to their line of expanding the alliance and Russia will have to take this factor into account when carrying out appropriate measures in the military sphere, “balancing the consequences of this step in terms of ensuring our security.”
