In response to a question from journalists, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov repliedthat the Kremlin does not discuss the topic of renaming Volgograd to Stalingrad.
He said that on February 2, Vladimir Putin was going to the city to take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army in the Battle of Stalingrad.
“There will be a number of memorial events, there will be communication with people, and for sure there will be communication with the head of the region,” the Kremlin official said.
Previously reportedthat in preparation for the anniversary date in Volgograd, road signs were changed to “Stalingrad”. Also, many banners with patriotic images appeared in the city.
Lately there has been a lively discussion of the proposal to return the city to its original name. But most of its inhabitants oppose it.
It is known that due to Putin’s visit to Volgograd, security measures have been strengthened. Officials and public sector employees were sent on vacation on February 2.
