Peskov: Russia will continue to work on unblocking the Lachin corridor

Russia is consistently working and will continue to work with Armenia and Azerbaijan in connection with the situation around the Lachin corridor. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the statement of the US State Department insisting on unblocking the route.
“The Russian side consistently continues its work with both Baku and Yerevan. <...> We will continue to work, now different options are being discussed and worked out with the parties. We will continue this work,” he said.
Peskov also recalled that earlier the first batch of humanitarian cargo, organized thanks to the efforts of Russia, arrived in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh deteriorated again in December 2022, when the Azerbaijani State Border Service established a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. The crisis led to a change in the leadership of Nagorno-Karabakh. On August 31, NKR leader Arayik Haratyunyan resigned, and on September 9, parliament elected Security Council Secretary Samvel Shahramanyan as the new president. On September 12, Azerbaijan ensured the passage of humanitarian cargo of the Russian Red Cross Society (ROSC) to the areas of Nagorno-Karabakh controlled by the Armenian side, Vedomosti wrote.
On September 3, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, said that Russia was moving away from the South Caucasus, and Russian peacekeepers had ceased to control the Lachin corridor. The Kremlin stated that can not agree with the prime minister’s theses, emphasizing that Russia is an integral part of the region.
On September 11, Peskov said that Moscow is not afraid of losing its ally in Yerevan, because Russia and Armenia remain close. On September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the unstable situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, called Yerevan’s recognition of Baku’s sovereignty over this territory the key to the problem.
