Peskov: peacekeepers continue to fulfill their function in Karabakh

Russian peacekeepers continue to perform their function in Nagorno-Karabakh amid the escalation of the situation; their safety is a priority for Russia. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this.
“The peacekeepers are performing their function, but nevertheless the situation remains difficult <...> So far we do not have any information that something has happened that threatens the lives of our peacekeepers. Of course, this is another important priority for us,” he said.
Peacekeepers are now, Peskov noted, in contact with all parties. The resumption of hostilities poses a serious challenge, especially in terms of security for civilians in Karabakh, he added.
During his conversation with journalists, Peskov also emphasizedthat Russia is working to return the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement process to a political and diplomatic track. The main thing in the current situation is to ensure the safety of the civilian population. Russia, through various channels, including the military, is in constant contact with Yerevan and Baku and calls on all parties to follow the provisions of the trilateral agreements.
On September 19, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced the start of “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The military republics claim that the measures are necessary for the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the territory of the region and “restoration of the constitutional order” of Azerbaijan. Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev later stated that the main tasks of Azerbaijan’s “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh are close to being completed.
Yerevan condemned Baku’s actions and called them “large-scale aggression.” They stated that the armed forces of the republic and military equipment are not stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh. Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova called on the parties to stop hostilities and return to the path of political and diplomatic settlement.
