Peskov explained the refusal of Armenian banks to accept Mir cards as sanctions

Russia and Armenia will continue to work on hedging risks in the banking sector, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov assured. According to him, the refusal of Armenian banks to use cards of the Russian Mir payment system is due to sanctions pressure from the United States.

“We have repeatedly told you that many countries are facing unprecedented pressure from the United States – threats of sanctions, secondary sanctions, and so on. Of course, economic institutions, companies, banks and other financial institutions are taking action… We, together with our Armenian friends, will continue to discuss and compensate for the way in which this unprecedented pressure is being inflicted by the Americans,” the Kremlin representative said during a press call.

Banks participating in the unified payment system of Armenia ArCa from March 30 stopped servicing Mir cards. In February, the National Payment Card System (NSCP) of the Russian Federation, the operator of the Mir payment system, came under US sanctions. In NSPC talkedthat foreign banks themselves decide to accept Mir cards, there are no restrictions on working with foreign partners from the payment system.
