Peskov commented on the request for help from the President of Niger

The intervention of third-party forces will not change the situation in Niger for the better, said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“It is unlikely that the intervention of some extra-regional forces can change this situation for the better,” said a Kremlin spokesman, commenting on the requests for help from the ousted President of Niger, Mohamed Bazum, to the world community.

Peskov said that Moscow is monitoring the situation in the African country. He also noted concern about “the tension that is now emerging in the region.” “We continue to advocate the return of this situation to the constitutional course without any damage and, most importantly, without a threat to human lives,” Peskov concluded.

On July 27, the Niger military announced the removal of Bazum and the closure of the country’s borders. At the same time, a nationwide curfew was announced, and the activities of all institutions of the republic were suspended. The rebels allegedly explained their actions by the deterioration of security, economic and social problems.

August 4 Bazum wrote article for The Washington Post, where he called on the United States and the international community to intervene to restore constitutional order in the country. He also drew attention to the fact that since he came to power after the next elections in 2021, the security situation in the country has improved significantly.

The UN, the European Union, the United States and the African Union called on the participants in the rebellion to release the democratically elected president of the country. Peskov noted that Moscow stands for the speedy restoration of the rule of law in the country and for “restraint on all sides so that this does not lead to human casualties.”
