Canada must learn a lesson from the shameful situation with honoring the veteran of the SS Galicia division Yaroslav Hunka (Hunko) in the country’s parliament. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
“It is very important that a country like Canada learn a lesson after the shame that happened to it, and then show its position when it hears such initiatives [по осуждению нацизма] Russian Federation,” he said.
According to Peskov, an apology from the Canadian authorities is not “the most important thing” in the current situation. He explained that it was more important to “realize that this is not acceptable in the future,” and pointed to the “lack of knowledge” in Canada about Nazism and fascism. The Kremlin spokesman said that this knowledge must be instilled in Canadian society “so that Nazism does not happen again.”
He added that Russia will present more than one initiative to adopt joint documents – both at the UN and in international formats – to condemn Nazism, and expressed hope that Canada will identify itself with such initiatives.
On September 22, Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota invited Hunka to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. The SS veteran was presented as a war hero and honored with applause. Rota later apologized “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” On September 26, it became known that the Speaker of the House of Commons would resign.
On September 27, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking in the House of Commons, called the incident a disgrace “for all of Canada.” He also apologized to Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation “for the position in which they were placed,” stressing that Ottawa will continue to support Kyiv.
