The proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to rename Russia to Muscovy is a ridiculous curiosity. This statement was made by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
“You know, this probably refers to such ridiculous curiosities – such messages or such decisions. <...> But I repeat once again, here you can only treat this with a smile, ”he said.
Peskov stressed that Russia “will remain a great country and Russia,” no matter how they try to rename it.
On March 11, Zelensky instructed Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to explore the possibility of “renaming” Russia into Muscovy in the Ukrainian language. In particular, the prime minister needs to study how this is possible in the historical and cultural context and what international legal consequences it may have.
The Ukrainian president made such a proposal after an electronic petition gained the necessary 25,000 signatures on his website. The petition proposes to replace the words “Russian Federation” with “Moscow Federation”, “Russian” with “Moscow”.
Initiative earlier commented Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to her, Zelensky’s proposal proves once again that they are trying to create “anti-Russia” in Ukraine.
