The rings presented to the leaders of the CIS countries at an informal summit in St. Petersburg are New Year’s souvenirs. This was announced by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
“You don’t need to focus on the rings, it’s just such a New Year’s souvenir, there’s nothing special there,” he said (quote according to TASS). Peskov clarified that the Russian leader does not plan to wear this decoration.
On December 26, the Pool of the First Telegram channel, close to the press service of the President of Belarus, reported that nine rings with New Year’s greetings had been prepared for the informal summit. Such a ring was noticed on the hand of the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
The network remembered the rings of Sauron – the main antagonist of the novel “The Lord of the Rings” by J. R. R. Tolkien – and nicknamed the gifts “rings of omnipotence”.
An informal CIS summit has been held in St. Petersburg since December 26. It ends today, December 27th. The heads of the Commonwealth countries arrived at the meeting. In particular, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan take part in the event.
