Peskov called the raising of the USSR flag in St. Petersburg a “symbol of continuity”

The raising of the USSR flag in St. Petersburg is “a symbol of the continuity of our Russian statehood,” said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president.

“This is precisely a symbol of the continuity of our Russian statehood. The history of modern Russia is not limited to recent history, it is also the history of the Soviet Union, this is the history of the Russian Empire, we have a very ancient and rich history,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Earlier, a ceremony of hoisting the flags of Russia, the USSR and the Russian Empire took place in the Gulf of Finland. By message Kremlin press service, Russian President Vladimir Putin also took part in the event – he watched the hoisting of the flags from the board of the Okhta yacht.

The flags were raised on flagpoles 175 meters high on the coastline near the Park of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg. As specified in the representation, it was timed to coincide with the dates of the establishment of each of them. “330 years – the tricolor of Peter the Great, 165 years – the flag of the Russian Empire, 100 years – the Red Banner,” the press service said.

A day earlier, on June 16, the President took part in the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which runs from 14 to 17 June. The main topic of the forum was “Sovereign development is the basis of a just world. Let’s join forces for the sake of future generations.” The events, according to the Kremlin, were attended by delegations from more than 15 countries, including the leaders of a number of states.
