Peskov called the honoring of a former member of the SS division in Canada “sloppy”

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov was outraged by the sloppy attitude towards memory in relation to the Nazis after a report about the honoring of SS Galicia soldier, Ukrainian Yaroslav Hunk (Gunko), in the Canadian Parliament.

“Such a sloppy attitude towards memory – and memory should be preserved in relation to the Nazis, they were not many years old – there is no statute of limitations for these crimes. Such sloppiness in this memory is, of course, outrageous,” Peskov said.

The press secretary of the Russian President clarified that the Kremlin knows that many Western countries, including Canada, “have raised a young generation that does not know who fought with whom and what happened during the Second World War.”

“They know nothing about the threat of fascism. This is fraught with the fact that fascism will manifest itself here and there. And now we see how he is practically trying to get on his feet in the center of Europe – in Ukraine. This is what we are waging an irreconcilable fight against,” Peskov emphasized.

On September 22, 98-year-old Gunko was invited to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, presenting him as a war hero. Later, Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota, who invited Gunko, brought an apology “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” Russian Embassy in Ottawa statedwhich will send a note to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the honoring of the veteran of the SS Galicia division.
