Peruvian police detain more than 300 people during protests

In Peru, police have detained more than 300 people during protests, the country’s prosecutor general’s office said.
As specified, 329 people were detained, including one minor. Law enforcement officers opened cases of mass riots, resistance to the authorities and obstruction of the work of public services.
The Prosecutor General’s Office also opened eight investigations related to the death of people during the protests.
On December 7, 2022, Pedro Castillo, who served as President of Peru, dissolved the parliament, which did not have time to consider the issue of his impeachment for the third time. But the legislators nevertheless gathered for a meeting and decided on the resignation of Castillo.
The security forces then arrested him on charges of sedition and abuse of power. Vice President Dina Boluarte took the oath of office as President of Peru in Congress, becoming the first woman in the country’s history to hold the highest public office.
Supporters of the ex-president have been holding protests since December 10. According to the latest data, at least 48 people died in them.
Meanwhile, Peru’s Attorney General’s Office launched a parallel investigation against President Boluarte and Prime Minister Alberto Otarola in a case of genocide due to the deaths of protesters.
