Berlin’s Supreme Administrative Court overturned the decision of the administrative court, which previously allowed the display of Russian and Soviet flags at Soviet memorials on May 9, the Berlin police said on Twitter.
“The Supreme Administrative Court found our complaint justified. The display of Russian flags and the flags of the USSR, as well as the St. George ribbon and the flag, is still prohibited at previously designated memorials,” – says in a statement (quote from RIA Novosti).
The Berlin police had previously imposed a ban on the use of Russian and Ukrainian flags on May 8 and 9 at Soviet memorials in Treptow Park, Tiergarten and Schoenholzer Heide Park. Later it became known that Ukrainian symbols were excluded from this ban.
The Russian Embassy in Germany stated that they resolutely did not accept the decision of the Berlin authorities, and on May 6, the ban on the use of Russian symbols at an event on June 17 Street was urgently appealed, the media wrote. As a result, the court noted the ban, after which the police announced that they would challenge this decision and file a complaint with the next instance – the Supreme Administrative Court.
The Russian embassy previously clarified that, in addition to the Russian flag, the demonstrations were also banned from symbols associated with Victory Day: the Banner of Victory, the flag of the USSR, the St. George ribbon, elements of historical military uniforms and songs of the war years.
