Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said that the West’s initiative to create a mechanism to collect reparations from the Russian Federation is legally null and void. At the session of the General Assembly of the World Organization, he noted that the disadvantage of this proposal is obvious.
He added that this was an attempt to “legalize what is illegal in terms of current international law.”
Earlier, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN stated that the Western countries are trying through the UN General Assembly to create a “appearance of legitimacy” for attempts to appropriate the frozen assets of the Russian Federation. We are talking about the preparation of a resolution “on holding Russia accountable, including” reparations “to Ukraine.”
Before that, it became known that the draft UN resolution on Ukraine spelled out an international mechanism for restoring the “damage inflicted on Ukraine” by hostilities. The draft document notes that such an international mechanism will be created in cooperation with Kyiv. Its main task is to compensate Ukraine for all the material damage that it has suffered in the confrontation with Russia.
