Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation in Geneva: rumors about Russian weapons in space are absurd

Claims by Western journalists that Russia is allegedly preparing to deploy nuclear weapons in space are false and absurd. This statement was made by Russia’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, on Friday, February 16.

The diplomat called it undeniable that “a new batch of groundless insinuations against Russia represents nothing more than another “cover operation” to divert attention from the practical implementation of the Americans’ own military space plans.”

Moscow remains firmly committed to its international obligations, including the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963, Gatilov emphasized.

After American leader Joe Biden ordered the establishment of diplomatic contacts with Moscow on the topic of anti-satellite weapons, Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov declared the readiness of the Russian side to such a dialogue. At the same time, he clarified that so far no such requests have been received from Washington.

US National Security Representative John Kirby has already stated that the notorious Russian space weapons allegedly violates the 1967 Outer Space Treatywhich prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in space.
