US and allied forces in Iraq have been attacked at least ten times, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder told reporters. The briefing was broadcast on the department’s page in X.

“Now I can say that <...> From October 17-24, US and coalition forces were attacked at least ten times in Iraq and three times in Syria,” he said.

The Pentagon spokesman added that the attacks were carried out using drones and missiles. The data is preliminary and more details will be released to the public at a later date, Ryder added. He also confirmed information that an F-16 squadron had been deployed to the region. The increase in military forces in the region is intended to reaffirm support for Israel and prevent the conflict from expanding, Ryder added.

A series of attacks on US military targets in Iraq began after Iraqi armed groups linked to Iran threatened to attack US targets if Washington intervened in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. On October 22, the US airbase at Ain al-Asad in Iraq’s western Anbar province was attacked. On the same day, the State Department ordered the evacuation of US diplomatic staff in this country who were not responsible for urgent matters, as well as their families.

US President Joe Biden, during a visit to Israel on October 18, reaffirmed Tel Aviv’s support in its war against Hamas, and the next day, in a televised address to the nation, he called support for Israel and Ukraine a “smart investment.” On October 20, it became known that Biden had asked Congress to allocate an additional $106 billion in the 2024 fiscal year.
