Pentagon Chief: Conflict in Ukraine Could Trigger Nuclear Arms Race

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin warned that the conflict in Ukraine could spur the spread of nuclear weapons, which “non-democratic regimes around the planet” could see as “a license to hunt for themselves.”
At a conference in Canada, the Pentagon chief said that the outcome of the confrontation, in which he sees a “historical challenge,” will determine the picture of global security in the 21st century. “As well as the fate of the world order, built on the results of World War II,” the head of the Pentagon believes.
Austin described the events in Ukraine as “an invitation to an increasingly less secure world, over which the shadow of nuclear proliferation looms.”
“This could set off a dangerous spiral of nuclear proliferation,” the head of the US military department warned.
