Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed gratitude to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin for opening new lanes at the Russian Verkhny Lars checkpoint. On June 15, three lanes for trucks were launched at the Upper Lars checkpoint after modernization, and earlier, in May, 11 lanes were reconstructed.

“I want, Mikhail Vladimirovich, to personally thank you for the fact that during our last meeting in Sochi you promised that new lanes at the Verkhny Lars checkpoint would soon open. It happened. And this is a very important, significant event in our relations,” the Prime Minister of Armenia said at the beginning of the bilateral meeting, which is taking place on the eve of the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council (quoted from Telegram channel Russian government).

Upper Lars is a checkpoint located in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. The road leading through the checkpoint connects Russia and Georgia and is a transport corridor between Transcaucasia on the one hand and Russia, Eastern Europe, Kazakhstan on the other.

In turn, Mikhail Mishustin noted the strengthening of trade and economic ties and the growth of trade between Russia and Armenia. He also stressed that the countries have expanded cooperation in the fields of energy and peaceful atom, mining, transport and logistics, as well as high technology.

Mr. Mishustin also stressed that Russia is in favor of unblocking economic, transport and logistics ties in the Transcaucasus. “I am convinced that the creation of new infrastructure routes will ensure sustainable economic development of the region and strengthen contacts between the people who live here,” he added.

At the moment, reconstruction work is underway at the Upper Lars checkpoint, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. Last year, as part of the ongoing modernization at the border crossing, 24 lanes for passenger cars were launched ahead of schedule: 12 lanes were opened in July, and 12 more in November. By 15 June, three more lanes had been launched. Thus, the total number of operating lanes for passenger and freight transport amounted to 39.
