Pashinyan: Armenia is discussing the construction of a nuclear power plant with Russia and the United States

Armenia is negotiating the construction of a new nuclear power plant with Russia and the United States. This was announced by the Prime Minister of the Republic Nikol Pashinyan.

He said the country is actively negotiating with several partners, including the United States, Russia and third countries, quotes Pashinyan Interfax. Armenia is looking for more profitable options from an economic point of view.

The Armenian delegation plans to visit the US to get acquainted with the modular reactors, Pashinyan added. He also clarified that the partners are informed of all negotiations “in due course.”

January 2022 reportedthat an agreement was signed between the subsidiary of Rosatom, Rusatom Overseas JSC, and the operators of the only station in the Republic of the Armenian NPP, CJSC Haykakan Atomayin Elektrakayan, on cooperation and development of new nuclear power units of Russian design in the country.

May 23, 2023 it became known that the United States study the option of building small modular nuclear reactors both in Armenia and other countries of Eurasia. According to the coordinator of the US government’s assistance programs to Europe and Eurasia, Maria Longa, this is necessary in order to “lead to greater energy independence of countries from both Russia and China.”
