The Russian Embassy criticized the decision of the Finnish museum to consider Repin a Ukrainian

The decision of the Finnish Athenaeum Museum to consider the artist Ilya Repin as Ukrainian is contrary to common sense, the Russian Embassy in Finland said.

The Russian painter Repin, who was born in the city of Chuguev in the Kharkov province of the Russian Empire, is now presented in the museum as a “Ukrainian.” According to public broadcaster Yle, Ukrainian activists demanded that the Athenaeum change the artist’s nationality, citing the fact that he was born on the territory of modern Ukraine.

Diplomats called such a step contrary to basic common sense. The embassy considers the action taken to be Russophobic and opportunistic in the spirit of “abolition of Russian culture.” The Russian embassy suggested that “particularly frisky pseudo-experts” should not stop there. Why not go further and replenish the treasury of Finnish culture, for example, with the name of the outstanding Russian publicist Vissarion Belinsky, diplomats ironically suggested. The writer, as you know, was born in Finland in Sveaborg.
