In Russia, officials at various levels do not understand the separation of functions between the executive branch and the electoral system and are trying to influence the work of election commissions. This was stated by the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Ella Pamfilova.
According to her, officials in the executive authorities at the municipal and regional levels do not understand the division of competencies and begin to “intervene and try to give some indications to members of lower commissions”, not coordinating their actions with the CEC and chairmen of regional commissions.
“Everyone is doing their own thing. When at some level, municipal or regional, mixing begins, someone imagined that the electoral system is a department of the executive, [то это] unacceptable,” stated Pamfilov (TASS quote).
The chairman of the CEC urged “immediately stop, beat on the hands” if officials try to interfere in the work of election commissions.
Formerly Pamfilova told Vedomosti that the information center of the CEC on a single voting day in 2023 will be organized not in the meeting room of the commission itself, as was the case in previous years, but in a third-party rented room. This is due to the fact that the commission’s meeting room is being renovated for the presidential campaign.
