Pamfilova hopes for an objective trial against the co-chair of Golos

Chairman of the Central Election Commission Ella Pamfilova commented to the newspaper Vedomosti the detention of one of the leaders of Golos (the organization was recognized as a foreign agent) Grigory Melkonyants. She stated that Grigory Melkonyants helped the CEC with “professional criticism”, and also expressed hope for an “objective trial” in his case.
“I really hope that they will sort it out objectively. Because his often professional criticism sometimes helped us a lot, ”Ella Pamfilova answered the question of how she relates to the initiation of a criminal case against Grigory Melkonyants.
The day before, Grigory Melkonyants and 14 other Golos employees were searched in eight regions. Later it became known that in relation to Grigory Melkonyants excited a criminal case on the organization of the work of an undesirable non-governmental organization (part 3 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). He faces up to six years in prison.
Golos is a movement to protect the rights of voters, created in 2013 by members of the Golos association (it was created back in 2000). The association ceased operations in 2013 after the Ministry of Justice suspended its activities because it did not recognize the status of a foreign agent assigned to it in the same year. After that, the members of the association created a movement of the same name.
On August 18, 2021, the Ministry of Justice entered the Golos movement into the register of foreign agents. In 2022, Roskomnadzor blocked the movement’s website due to the publication of “inaccurate socially significant information about the Russian military operation in Ukraine.”
Searches of members of the Golos movement have already passed in October 2022. They were carried out as part of a criminal case against Ivanovo Golos activist Mikhail Gusev about discrediting the army (Article 208.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
