Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas may visit Russia this year, told Head of the Palestinian Foreign Ministry Riyad al-Maliki “RIA Novosti” during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which takes place in New York.
“In any case, my president’s visit to the Russian Federation is being prepared soon,” the diplomat noted, refusing to disclose additional information regarding Abbas’s plans.
Al-Maliki added that he himself intends to visit Moscow, where he will have negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On July 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Abbas. “The Palestinian leader expressed his full support for the actions of the Russian leadership to protect the constitutional order and law and order taken during the events of June 24,” the Kremlin said in a statement regarding this conversation.
In addition, Putin and Abbas expressed their readiness to continue developing friendly relations between Russia and Palestine. The head of the Russian state once again confirmed the position of Moscow, which advocates a fair and sustainable resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
