At the end of 2023, mentions of representatives of domestic large businesses in the context of charity in the Russian media sharply decreased. This follows from Kommersant’s calculations in the 11th annual League of Outstanding Businessmen project, measuring the media presence and media influence of the Russian business elite.

In 2023, 158 owners and top managers of Russia’s largest companies were mentioned in the media next to the words “patron”, “sponsor”, “grant” and similar 4.3 thousand times. For comparison: in 2022, a comparable number of people (153) accounted for 7.6 thousand mentions, and a year earlier – 8.1 thousand.

“We can cautiously assume that under sanctions pressure, businessmen are trying to do good deeds more quietly, without attracting unnecessary attention to themselves and the recipients of such assistance,” say the authors of the League of Outstanding Businessmen.

The first place among the “most charitable” (based on mentions in the media) entrepreneurs last year was taken by the president of the Interros management company, Vladimir Potanin. Alisher Usmanov was second, Andrey Melnichenko was third.

Only Mr. Potanin’s number of mentions in the context of charity in 2023 exceeded 1 thousand. The remaining participants in the top 10 ranged from 80 to 250 mentions. In 2022, the leader in this indicator, Roman Abramovich, had 1.6 thousand mentions.

Other results of measuring the information field of Russian business are in the project “League of Outstanding Businessmen 2024
