General Director of the Astrakhansky AIC Mikhail Zaitsev said that the share of Dutch tomato seeds in the enterprise was 35%. Now “this quantity” is potentially not enough, Mr. Zaitsev told the agency RBC.
The Astrakhan region ranks first in vegetable production in Russia. More than 70% of tomatoes and 30% of onions are grown in the region, as well as every third watermelon in the commercial sector, the regional Ministry of Agriculture reported.
At the end of November 2023, Rosselkhoznadzor banned the import of Dutch seeds due to the systematic detection of quarantine objects in them. After this, Mikhail Zaitsev said, the enterprise had problems with planting material.
He explained that “seeds are not grown in one day”—supply plans are formed a year in advance. It is no longer possible to ask suppliers to sell, since they “simply don’t have them,” explains Mr. Zaitsev. But in Russia there are no seeds for the production of tomato paste on an industrial scale, he says.
The issue of imported seeds was discussed at a meeting with Roman Nekrasov, director of the plant growing department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, on January 17, RBC reports, citing one of the meeting participants. “After the meeting, there were changes in supplies, and the seeds are already on their way,” Irina Murashova, a member of the board of the National Union of Fruit and Vegetable Producers, told the agency.
