Outerwear will rise in price by 15%: how to save on coats and raincoats

Expert Volkov: “Prepare swimsuits in winter, and down jackets in summer”

Coats and down jackets have risen sharply in price. With the onset of cold weather, outerwear increased in price by an average of a quarter. Reasons: currency risks and weakening of the ruble, rising costs of imported components, rising costs of logistics, increased wages for workers. It would seem that the import substitution program is moving briskly across the country. Despite this, it is extremely difficult to find completely domestic goods in our light industry: Russia purchases materials, raw materials, accessories and much more abroad. Update your wardrobe or spend money on repairing old clothes? Should I buy one high-quality but expensive jacket, or several “disposable” ones made of leatherette? Experts told MK about this.

Outerwear has risen in price by 25% compared to the summer months, according to data from the state labeling system. Thus, in September, citizens bought coats for an average of 9 thousand 754 rubles. Compared to summer, the cost increased by 21%. The average cost of raincoats increased by 34%, and jackets by 37%.

The main reason for rising prices is the high share of imported components in the price of the final product. A coat or down jacket may contain no more than 20–30% of Russian-made materials, and the rest is imported. That’s why prices are rising, because the value of the dollar has increased, says managing partner of B&C Agency Ivan Samoilenko.

“It is still difficult to talk about complete import substitution, but Russian manufacturers are actively developing to gain market share that previously belonged to foreigners,” he continues. “Imports mainly come from China, Thailand, India, and CIS countries.”

Russia, of course, has its own clothing production, both large and fairly well-known almost from Soviet times, as well as young brands. Russian designers successfully compete with foreign colleagues, so there is no need to worry about the price-quality ratio, notes Artem Deev, head of the analytical department at AMarkets. Moreover, products of little-known domestic brands can be much cheaper than famous foreign brands with comparable quality.

Meanwhile, the industry itself is experiencing a total shortage of personnel. According to textile and light industry market expert Andrei Volkov, in order to retain existing specialists, it is necessary to revise wages upward several times a year, which also contributes to an increase in the cost of the final product.

“The volatility of the exchange rate leads to manufacturers including exchange rate differences in purchases for future periods. Yes, payments are made in different currencies, but the final invoice is issued in dollars, euros and yuan. This seriously affects prices,” continues MK’s interlocutor.

Judging by the forecasts of financial authorities, inflation in the country will continue to grow – at least until the middle of next year. This is recognized by both the Central Bank and other departments. From this we can conclude that clothing will continue to rise in price, like other consumer goods.

“By the New Year, prices for outerwear will most likely increase by another 10–15%,” says Anna Vovk, a member of the Council on Financial, Industrial and Investment Policy of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation.

In such conditions, it would be right to pay attention to promotions, discounts, and sales periods. Experts advise buying outerwear in the low season (spring and summer); you can also use the services of a clothing tailoring and repair shop. This will be reasonable, since the country has entered a period of intelligent consumption and cost reduction. Therefore, everyone should think about saving, regardless of income level.

“It is better to buy any clothes in advance, for example, swimsuits in winter, and down jackets in summer. Another option is to shop at the latest sales, waiting for maximum discounts, continues Andrey Volkov. – One more piece of advice. Avoid fashion trends – you always have to pay extra for them. It is better to focus on the versatility, quality and usability of clothing. One quality pair of shoes at a higher price is better than two cheap ones.”
