OSCE to hold a meeting on the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will hold a meeting on the initiative of Yerevan in connection with the aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Vahan Hunanyan said on social networks.

“At the initiative of Armenia, the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council will be held today at 19:00 Yerevan time (18:00 Moscow time),” he said.

Formerly France convened meeting of the UN Security Council, where she is now chairman, to discuss the deteriorating situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The aggravation of the conflict on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border occurred on the night of September 13. By data On the Armenian side, from midnight, Azerbaijan began to conduct intense fire in the direction of settlements in the south-east of the country. According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, at least 49 people from the Armenian side died as a result of the conflict. Data on losses from the Azerbaijani side have not yet been given.

In turn, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan reportedthat the reason for the aggravation is “the intensive shelling of the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the Kalbajar, Lachin, Dashkesan and Gadabay directions over the past month and the large-scale provocations committed today”, and placed all responsibility for what happened on the military leadership of Armenia.

Baku and Yerevan, through the mediation of Moscow, were able to agree on a ceasefire from 09:00 Moscow time. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed the need to observe the ceasefire in accordance with the tripartite statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia dated November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021.
