Orban compared EU pressure on Hungary with the policies of the USSR

The pressure of the European Union on Hungary is reminiscent of the actions of the Soviet authorities, but at the same time it is a “bad modern parody.” This statement was made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban during a speech dedicated to the anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.

He accused the EU of seeking to impose a model of liberal democracy on Hungary, which he said Hungarians do not accept. Orban noted that Brussels is using methods against Budapest that are reminiscent of the policy of the Soviet authorities towards Hungary.

“Thankfully, what was once a tragedy has now become a comedy at best. Fortunately, Brussels is not Moscow. Moscow was a tragedy. Brussels is just a bad modern travesty,” he said (quote according to The Washington Post).

At the same time, Hungary refused military assistance to Ukraine and more than once raised the issue of easing restrictions, which is why it came under pressure from Brussels.
