The participants of the Grushin conference held in Moscow (organized by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center) analyzed the psychological state of the Russians. It turned out that, although their mental health is facing new challenges, psychological defense mechanisms have triggered the “rallying around the flag” effect and even caused a surge of social optimism, which has a chance to become sustainable if the government avoids undermining trust in social institutions. At the same time, the Russians began to gravitate more toward social democratic and liberal, rather than conservative, values and sympathize with centrist political forces, experts say.
