Candidates must garner 1% of the vote in at least three nationwide polls — or 1% in two nationwide polls and 1% in an early voting state — to participate in the upcoming Republican debate. They must also prove they have 40,000 unique donors and then sign a loyalty pledge.

Christy, who passed the voting and donation threshold, told ABC that the pledge was a “bad idea” and would not sign it.

Trump himself said he would not sign the pledge and made no commitment to participate in the August 23 debate.
