The press center of “Parliamentskaya Gazeta” hosted a round table on the economic potential of new Russian regions. The senators representing them shared their optimistic plans for the restoration of these territories. So, members of the Federation Council from Zaporozhye and Kherson regions expect an imminent influx of tourists. According to them, it remains only to move the front line. And their colleagues representing the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) recalled that Donbass was a real gem of the USSR economy, and assured that its industrial enterprises were not at all cut into scrap metal, as some people think.

The event was opened by Zaporozhye senator Dmitry Vorona, who spoke about the passportization of residents of the region. According to him, to date, almost 30% of the population “have received Russian passports or have applied for them.” Mr. Vorona added that thanks to the adopted federal laws, social issues began to be resolved and pensions were paid. “We are preparing for serious investments, but we are not making a mistake ourselves, we are trying to start the economy as much as possible,” he assured.

The Zaporozhye region “within the borders that we control today” (its northern part, including the city of Zaporozhye, is controlled by Ukraine. – “Kommersant”) is an agricultural region, therefore, first of all, the authorities solve the issues of sowing and logistics, Dmitry Vorona continued : “In order to be able to trade products, we are launching the Berdyansk port, we understand the program for its development and reconstruction.” Another promising area is tourism, which is still perceived “with a smile,” the senator added.

“The Sea of Azov has again become the inland sea of the Russian Federation, and we are working to maximize the growth of tourist flows, because our places of recreation are quite seriously developed, there are a lot of recreation centers – about 1 thousand on the coast. Thank God, we don’t have cases of shelling of these territories,” said Dmitry Vorona.

According to the senator, since the entry of the Zaporozhye region into the Russian Federation, about 10 billion rubles have already been attracted to the economy of the region, 40% of industrial enterprises have been launched, 40 bank branches have been recreated and about 400 km of railway lines have been repaired.

“Most active road construction is being carried out, which the region has not seen all the time as part of Ukraine,” Mr. Vorona said. “Gradually, the region comes to life, people return, open their own business. Within a year or two, we will see a full economic recovery.”

Following was the senator from the Kherson region Konstantin Basyuk, who said that after joining Russia, the subject began to return the lost sales markets. The neighboring regions were the first to feel the effect of this process, for example, strawberries and tomatoes fell in price in Crimea. Further promotion of agricultural products on the domestic market, as well as reorientation of supplies to the Middle East and Africa, is one of the priorities of the local authorities, added Mr. Basyuk.

Another task is to bring the road economy to a standard state.

According to the senator, now 80% of the roads in the Kherson region do not meet the requirements. The authorities promise to solve the problem until 2025 or 2027, depending on the amount of funding.

“These are the roads along which grain is exported, so they must be in proper condition,” Konstantin Basyuk stated. There are also plans to launch new directions of rail transportation.

“The third cluster, which will certainly develop, is tourism. The Kherson region is unique in this case, because it connects two seas – the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea,” the senator continued. “The infrastructure has been created here, now we need to resolve security issues, move the front line, and then it will sparkle with new colors.”

In conclusion, representatives of the Federation Council from the DPR and LPR took the floor, who recalled what a pearl the industry of Donbass was in Soviet times and what a “huge treasure” Russia received with the annexation of this territory. “The Kiev regime introduced myths into the mass consciousness that enterprises were cut into scrap metal. We have to fight these stereotypes,” Luhansk Senator Daria Lantratova said, listing industrial production facilities operating in the republic and their economic results.
