The Sakhalin Regional Duma elected Sergei Bondarev as deputy chairman, Kommersant was told in the representative body today, October 21. The post of vice-speaker became vacant in the recently determined composition of the Duma after death the oldest deputy of the region, Vitaly Gomilevsky, who has worked in parliament until the age of 80.
The candidacy of 62-year-old Sergei Bondarev was the only one on the ballot, he collected all 20 votes. He is serving his second term in the regional duma. Like his predecessor, Mr. Bondarev represents United Russia.
The post of deputy chairman of the Sakhalin parliament remained vacant for almost two weeks. Kommersant sources close to the Duma and the government of the region believe that this period was needed to conduct the necessary negotiations and prepare the ground for voting.
