NYT: White House administration bickers over transfer of long-range missiles to Ukraine
[ad_1]
Officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden are arguing over the supply of ATACMS ballistic missiles to Ukraine. About this with reference to sources informs newspaper The New York Times.
The publication notes that in May, the UK sent Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, and France has already promised the delivery of SCALP missiles. At the same time, the US still cannot decide to send ATACMS.
The Biden administration acknowledges that Kyiv’s forces are running dangerously low in a counteroffensive. However, there is a “quiet debate” among officials that surface-to-surface ballistic missiles are reserved for “other security threats.”
According to sources, the United States fears that the missiles will be used by Ukrainian forces to hit targets in Russia, which will escalate the conflict.
Pentagon officials have warned authorities their arsenal of ATACMS is relatively small. They are used for other military plans, including on the Korean Peninsula. Transferring them to Ukraine will jeopardize readiness in other hot spots.
