NYT: Ukrainian elections could undermine Zelensky’s legitimacy

The New York Times (NYT), citing experts, reports that Ukrainian officials, despite the martial law in the country, are actively discussing the possibility of holding presidential and parliamentary elections that could undermine the legitimacy of the current President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky.
According to the publication, there is talk among the Ukrainian political establishment that Zelensky may seek a vote in order to secure a new term for himself in conditions where holding competitive elections is impossible. At the same time, the newspaper believes that in order to hold elections in the country, the Ukrainian leadership will be forced to at least temporarily lift martial law.
The NYT emphasized that such elections during a conflict could weaken efforts aimed at advertising the current Ukrainian government among Western allies. The director of the Ukrainian election monitoring organization Opora, Olga Aivazovskaya, argues that many residents of Ukraine currently do not have the opportunity to take part in the vote due to the fact that they left the country or are involved in the conflict, therefore, in her opinion, such an election would almost certainly undermine rather than strengthen Zelensky’s legitimacy.
