NYT: Delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine will take years

European countries and the United States will face great difficulties in supplying Ukraine with Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams tanks. Officials in Washington said it could take years for US combat vehicles to arrive.
According to the publication The New York Times, the process of delivering Western weapons to Kyiv has always been one of the most closely guarded secrets. For this, “secret convoys” are used, which usually move in the dark or are properly camouflaged.
So far, Russia has not been able to hit a single column with weapons. But now the risk and fears are so great that Kyiv will have to take weapons from warehouses on NATO territory. The Alliance will not deliver it to the conflict zone.
The transfer of armored vehicles to Ukraine would be the perfect moment for Russia to strike decisively. An attack on a weapons convoy would not only delay future deliveries, but would also destroy a significant portion of the armored vehicles before they arrived at the front.
Some military officials described the possible route as a “patchwork” of territories from Poland, Slovakia and Germany. Most of the weapons will probably be delivered by rail. A long convoy of trucks will inevitably draw Russia’s attention.
Experts believe that it will take too much time, fuel and spare parts to deliver tanks and other armored vehicles to the battlefield. The convoys will also become a moving target for Russian warplanes.
General Robert B. Abrams, after whose father the combat vehicle was named, said that it would be very difficult for Ukrainian troops to obtain tanks, as well as to use and maintain them, train crews and mechanics, and create supply depots.
