NYT: American officials admit that Il-76 was shot down from Patriot

US officials, on condition of anonymity, admit that the Il-76 in the Belgorod region was shot down by a Patriot air defense system. The New York Times writes about this with reference to US officials.
“Officials have not publicly commented on what exactly was used to down the plane. However, officials spoke privately on condition of anonymity to say that reports of the use of a Patriot missile are correct,” the publication said.
They added that the United States did not confirm the identities of those who were on board, but believe that there is a possibility that there were indeed Ukrainian prisoners there.
The newspaper’s sources also reported that the Patriot system used to shoot down the plane was provided by a European country.
The Ministry of Defense previously reported that there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners on board who were being transported for exchange. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that, according to an examination, the plane was shot down by a Patriot air defense system.
