On Monday, August 7, United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland visited Niger, where she met with representatives of the military who had previously removed the country’s president from power. It is reported by Reuters.
According to Nuland, she held frank and sometimes difficult negotiations with representatives of the military.
Earlier, the rebels in Niger announced the transfer of troops from two Central African states to participate in the invasion of the country.
On July 26, it became known that the rebels were holding President Mohamed Bazum in the Niger capital, Niamey, while the army, remaining loyal to the policy, issued them an ultimatum. On the night of July 27, the rebellious military announced the removal of the president and the transfer of power to the “National Council for the Salvation of the Motherland” on national television. They also closed borders, suspended the constitution, and banned all political parties.
