Norwegian authorities have announced the adoption of measures that will reduce the influx of refugees into the country from Ukraine. This was announced on Monday, January 29, by the Minister of Justice and Public Security of Norway, Emilie Enger Mehl, and the head of the Norwegian Ministry of Labor, Tunje Brenna.
As Mehl emphasized, the number of refugees arriving in Norway “must be at a cost-effective and controllable level.” The country has already received over 73 thousand internally displaced persons from Ukraine – more than any other country in Northern Europe.
In order to reduce the flow of Ukrainian refugees, it was decided to deprive persons with temporary protection who refused to live in special reception centers of economic assistance. This means that those wishing to “live privately during the reception phase must pay for their accommodation and manage it independently.”
Ukrainian refugees in Ireland admit that they are confused and scared: they may soon be left without free housing. Also the Irish government decided to cut their weekly allowance from 220 to 38.8 euros. As a result, some Ukrainian refugees flee Europe to Russia.
In total, according to the UN, about 10 million inhabitants of Ukraine left home due to fighting. Of these, about 6.3 million people went abroad, and another 3.7 million people moved to other regions of the country.
