On Monday, the DPRK Foreign Ministry accused the US and South Korea of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula to the level of a “nuclear war” and stressed that North Korea will increase its defense capabilities, the Yonhap news agency reported.
According to a research report from the Institute for American Studies, military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia are being compared to the night before the Korean War of 1950-53, with the US and South Korea accused of “frantic anti-communist military confrontation” and “rhetorical threats.”
The report says: “US military action is only exacerbating military tensions in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, which are already in a highly volatile situation, bringing them closer to the brink of nuclear war.”
The study warns that the war on the peninsula “could quickly develop into a world and thermonuclear war, which would have catastrophic and irreversible consequences for peace and stability in the region and in the world as a whole.”
