Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the country’s leadership had not made any decisions to ban the use of VPN services designed to bypass blocking.
“I can only say that now there are no decisions on this matter. This is what we must proceed from,” said a Kremlin representative during a conference call.
The day before, on February 5, at a meeting with students of school No. 1 in Yekaterinburg, the head of the “Safe Internet League” Ekaterina Mizulina stated, that most VPN services can be blocked in Russia from March 1, 2024. She emphasized that we are talking exclusively about the largest such services. Later in his Telegram channel Ms. Mizulina stated that the media, which after her statement reported that VPNs had been blocked in the Russian Federation since March 1, freely interpreted her words.
Head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Alexander Khinshtein clarifiedthat there is no talk of a complete ban on VPN services in the Russian Federation; from March 1, a ban on the popularization of such resources will come into force.
