NI: Russia threatens Washington’s plans in Europe

Symington Smith, a member of the US National Committee on US-China Relations, expressed serious concerns about the future balance of power in Europe. According to the American expert, Moscow is disrupting this balance due to its influence on Eastern Europe.
In an article for the National Interest magazine, he noted that Washington views support for Ukraine as a strategically important move in the geopolitical game. The American administration is trying to prevent the emergence of a new dominant force in Europe.
“Russia’s significant influence in Eastern Europe upsets the balance, potentially guaranteeing Moscow control of European energy corridors and trade routes. This is a worrying future for the American leadership,” he said.
Also, according to Smith, Ukraine’s non-aligned or allied status is not only strategic, but also historically important for Russia. The Russian authorities want to secure their western borders because they remember Napoleon and Hitler, the analyst added.
