NHK: Japan decided to deploy hypersonic weapons in Hokkaido

Japan decided to deploy hypersonic weapons with a range of up to 1,000 km on two islands: Hokkaido and Kyushu. This was reported by the NHK TV channel, citing government sources.
It is noted that by 2026 two new units will be created as part of the ground self-defense forces. They will control the launches of hypersonic missiles carrying warheads. The principle of operation of such a missile is that the carrier is separated from the warhead and the latter simply plans for the target. Such weapons are said to be harder to intercept.
To place such weapons on the outlying islands, the Japanese government needs to obtain the consent of local authorities. In addition, the rearmament program will require large expenditures. Already, there are plans to increase the country’s military budget for 2023-2027 by 1.5 times. In the coming five-year period, Japanese politicians are going to spend about $319 billion on defense. By 2027, defense spending should be up to 2% of GDP.
