Newsweek explained the danger of Zelensky’s unrealistic peace formula

The American weekly Newsweek dedicated its new material prospects for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. Author Brennan David notes that both Moscow and Kyiv put forward terms for negotiations, but they are so contradictory that now there is little hope for diplomacy.

Ukraine aims to host a UN summit in February based on Volodymyr Zelensky’s 10-point peace plan. But this plan has already been rejected by the Kremlin and both sides are expected to launch an offensive soon.

The publication cites the opinion of an independent analyst and expert on Russia, Nikolai Petrov, who warned that too high a bar set in the “Zelensky formula” could have negative consequences for Kyiv.

“In my opinion, what we are seeing now are very high expectations, which are natural when viewed from the Ukrainian side, but which are dangerous,” Petrov said. He explained that if these expectations were not met, they could well lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction.

The expert added that Ukraine’s desire to “force out Russian troops” from every inch of Ukrainian territory is “inappropriate and unrealistic.”

The analyst suggested that Russia is now implementing plan B, which is to “wait until the Ukrainian side fizzles out, while the western side fizzles out.” After that, Russia will be able to celebrate the victory.

Petrov also explained that if there are no positive results from the huge effort, then it would be natural for Europeans to ask what went wrong and whether the effort should be continued. As for the United States, there may be a change in the political situation with the American elections.
