New Zealand Defense Minister says there is no independent foreign policy

New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins disagreed that her country had an independent foreign policy and called the term “somewhat outdated and misleading.”

Collins told the American publication Breaking Defense that after the country left ANZUS, which united Australia, New Zealand and the United States, in the 1980s, it planned not to join such blocs. This is what was meant by an “independent foreign policy” in New Zealand, the minister said.

From 2023, New Zealand supports joining the non-nuclear component of military-technical cooperation under AUKUS.
