The DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions annexed to Russia will be included within the borders of the Southern Military District from March 1, 2024. Corresponding draft decree published on the federal portal of draft regulatory legal acts. The closing date for public comment is October 4.
“Establish the following military-administrative division of the Russian Federation from March 1, 2024. The area of responsibility of the Southern Military District will be expanded to new regions of the Russian Federation – the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions,” says the draft decree.
The document also provides for the formation of the Leningrad and Moscow military districts within the administrative boundaries of the constituent entities of Russia, now included within the boundaries of the Western Military District and the Northern Fleet.
On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the inclusion of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into Russia based on the results of referendums. Ukraine, as well as a number of Western countries, did not recognize the territorial changes and condemned them, calling them annexation.
The fact that four annexed regions will be included in the area of responsibility of the Southern Military District became known in February 2023. Then the Ministry of Defense published an updated map of the district, which included the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
