The vote in the UN Security Council on the Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone showed who really wants a truce and who is pursuing political goals. Nebenzya expressed regret that the UN Security Council “once again found itself hostage to the selfish aspirations” of the West. This, he said, is the only reason the Council has failed to “send a clear, strong collective message aimed at de-escalating” the situation in the Middle East.
The draft resolution of the Russian Federation condemned hostilities against civilians and “all acts of terrorism,” and also contained a call for an immediate ceasefire. Also in the document, the Council called for the release of hostages, the unimpeded supply of humanitarian aid and the creation of conditions for the evacuation of civilians, notes “RIA News”.
During the voting, the resolution did not receive the required nine votes: five countries supported it, four were against it. Another six states abstained.
The situation in the Middle East escalated in early October when the Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Iron Swords, which regularly attacks hundreds of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government announced that the country had entered a state of war. According to the latest data, the death toll during the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has exceeded 4,000 people, more than half of them are Palestinians.
