Nebenzya: The US sabotaged the adoption of a balanced UN resolution on Gaza

From the very beginning of the current aggravation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, the US delegation sabotaged any attempts to develop a balanced and depoliticized document at the UN level, aimed at taking real and urgent measures to de-escalate the situation. This was stated by Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya at a meeting of the organization’s Security Council.

According to the permanent representative, Washington has consistently rejected draft resolutions demanding a ceasefire.

“Our American colleagues on the council, justifying the collective punishment and destruction of Palestinians, primarily the civilian population, hiding behind slogans about the fight against terrorism and Israel’s right to self-defense, have actually paralyzed the work of the main UN body for maintaining peace and security,” Nebenzya said.

On October 27, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution put forward by Arab countries that calls for an immediate truce in the conflict zone. It condemns violence against civilians on both sides, and also calls for the release of illegally held prisoners and compliance with humanitarian law – not to attack peaceful civilian targets. Israel subsequently refused to cease hostilities. On the same day, the Israel Defense Forces announced an expansion of the ground operation in Gaza.

November 9 Nebenzya called stop discussing Gaza’s future and focus on its present. According to him, now it is necessary to stop the fighting in order to save the lives of the civilian population.
