Kyiv violated humanitarian law by installing an air defense system in a residential area of Dnepropetrovsk. This was the cause of the tragedy in the city, where, as a result of the work of Ukrainian air defense, part of the house collapsed. This statement was made by Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.
“A Russian missile launched at an energy infrastructure facility was hit by Ukrainian air defense forces. And since the air defense installation was placed in a residential area in violation of the norms of international humanitarian law, which you are so proud of, the downed missile fell on a residential building, ” said he.
Nebenzya added that if Kyiv had followed humanitarian law, the tragedy in Dnepropetrovsk would not have happened. He also noted that Russia would not have to strike at Ukraine’s military infrastructure, “if the Ukrainian leadership showed readiness for peace negotiations on realistic terms.”
On the evening of January 14, after the explosion, the entrance of a multi-storey building in the Dnieper (formerly Dnepropetrovsk) collapsed. As a result of the incident, 35 people died, the city authorities said. Later, Aleksey Arestovich, an adviser to the office of the President of Ukraine, said that the entrance to the high-rise building collapsed due to the fall of a rocket shot down by Ukrainian troops on it. The military command of Ukraine denied this information. January 17 Arestovich filed resign.
After this incident in the Kremlin remindedthat the Russian Armed Forces do not strike at residential buildings and social infrastructure facilities in Ukraine – only at military targets. The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, referring to the statements of the Ukrainian authorities, noted that the tragedy was the result of the air defense.
